Lady Rosie West Obituary
Lady West at the 2017 Reunion
Lady Rosie West passed away, after a long illness, in St Joseph’s Hospice Hackney on Wednesday 23 September 2026. Admiral Lord West told the Association, “She fought a long, brave battle against the Cancer that finally killed her, defying predictions and living several years more than expected. Every moment was precious to all her family and multitude of friends.”
Lady West was a big part of the HMS Ardent Association as reflected in condolence messages from across the Association. In these tributes, she is remembered not merely as the wife of our commanding officer, but as a central, beloved member of the ship's crew and family who held a deeply revered place in our community.
Association members' condolences consistently celebrate her as a "true lady" and a larger-than-life character—vibrant, positive, warm, and wonderfully down-to-earth. Rosie is warmly remembered for her genuine personal care, treating the ship's company as her own and proving a fierce, steadfast friend to the wives and families in times of adversity. Whether remembered as “…the best passenger a boat driver ever had”, or a welcoming presence who never forgot personal details, or the best of companions to share a drink and a roll-up with, the messages reflect profound gratitude from people proud to have known her and united in mourning someone who will never be forgotten.

Rosie was a talented artist celebrated for her vibrant, narrative-rich artworks that delved into themes of identity, femininity, and contemporary culture. Her creations often blended traditional techniques with modern motifs, resulting in pieces that are both timeless and current. Rosie honed her artistic skills at the Camberwell School of Art, where she developed a foundation in classical painting. She further advanced her studies at the Slade School of Fine Art, immersing herself in contemporary practices and critical theory. This diverse educational background informed her unique style, which married the precision of classical art with the dynamism of modern themes.
In 2013 Rosie created an image of the ARDENT in Falkland Sound on the 21 May 1982 for an exhibition in London.
Falkland Sound by Rosie West
“An 8,000 mile horizon in the South Atlantic carries painful reverberations for the bereaved, the beloved, the families and the men who were saved from a stricken warship. For those twenty-two who never returned we can only keep a perfect remembrance.”
Rosie’s final exhibition in 2015 was Shades of Sweetness, a disarming exploration of childhood, adolescence, and the stories we tell ourselves. Part fairytale, part psychological maze, her work invited us into a world that is at once familiar and quietly disturbing.

Rosie was far more than part of our history; she was woven into the very fabric of our crew. Rosie stood shoulder-to-shoulder with our families in the darkest moments and brought laughter, spirit, and genuine friendship to every reunion. The entire HMS Ardent family sends its heartfelt condolences and love to the Boss and the family. She will never be forgotten.
