Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth understood the sacrifices by the men and women of the armed services and the pain of bereaved families. In addition to awarding military honours, she introduced the Elizabeth Cross. It was the first medal to which the Queen put her name. Instituted in 2009, it gives special recognition to the families of those who have died on military operations or as a result of terrorism, since 1948.

In a broadcast to the armed forces in 2009 she said:

“I greatly hope that the Elizabeth Cross will give further meaning to the nation’s debt of gratitude to the families and loved ones of those who have died in the service of our country. We will remember them all.” She added to those serving: “Wherever you are deployed in the world, you should be assured that I and the whole nation are deeply thankful for the part you play in helping to maintain peace around the globe.”

And Queen Elizabeth led the nation in person paying respects to the fallen at almost every Remembrance Sunday throughout her reign.

Queen Elizabeth was never more at ease than when surrounded by the men and women of the armed forces and took great pride in and care of the hundreds of thousands who served during her reign.

We will always remember Her.
