Petty Officer (Sonar) Tony Clements

It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of our shipmate Tony Clements.

Tony was one of the ASWDs during the conflict, and Pete has many fond memories of a gentle soul and close colleague. We last saw Tony at the National Memorial Arboretum a couple of years ago, and although he was struggling to walk, he appeared in good health.

His daughter, Vicky, said he had been struggling with PTSD, and the loss of his second wife in 2023 triggered a lot of pain. He battled bravely over the last few years, but eventually his body gave up on him. Our thoughts and condolences are with Vicky and all the family at this very sad time.

Tony’s funeral service was held at Gelding crematorium in Nottingham 4 June 2026. Cliff Goldfinch, Frank Gilmore and David Searle were there. It was very well attended, and the crematorium chapel was full.

Members of the local Royal Naval Association were present with standard bearers and a bugler.

Tony’s coffin, which had the ARDENT crest engraved at its head, was draped in the white ensign and his cap was atop the coffin.

It was a poignant service of reflection on Tony’s life, family, sense of humour and hobbies. The service opened with the celebrant reading from a 1982 press report which comprehensively covered ARDENT’s actions and the onslaught it faced on 21 May, from the first appearance of the Pucara aircraft in the morning to the order to abandon ship. All those present were clearly moved by the report.

It was clear that Tony held his time in Royal Navy and especially his time in ARDENT with pride. And his family were very appreciative and touched by the messages of condolence they had received, and the presence at the funeral of so many Royal Navy veterans and especially the ARDENT association.
